Why You Should Avoid Sugar When You’re Sick

Why You Should Avoid Sugar When You're Sick | Eco-Mothering.com

This is something I wondered recently when Sofie came down with a bad cold after a string of birthday parties and Halloween activities. I knew that a virus had caused the cold, but I wondered if an excess of sugary treats had contributed to it. Motherly instinct told me to reduce the number of sweets Sofie ate while she was sick (a trying rule to implement during Halloween!), but my suggestion was met with such horror from my seven-year-old that I had to see if there was any foundation for my parental decision. I learned some interesting things. Like how most plants and animals (including cats and dogs) can convert sugar into vitamin C. Now that would be cool. Unfortunately, humans are not one of the lucky animals who can do this. In humans, glucose (sugar) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) compete with each other, so a diet high in … Continue reading

Top 5 Health Benefits of Sunshine

Heath Benefits of Sunshine | Eco-Mothering.com

I just LOVE the smell of clothes that have been drying in the sun: fresh, outdoorsy and warm to the skin. Lately, I’ve taken to hanging my bath towel outside every day, and that dank odor it often acquires has completely disappeared! Why? Because the sun’s rays kill off the bacteria that contribute to mildew smells. This exciting discovery caused me to look into other amazing powers of sunshine. It helps our body make Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for strengthening bones and teeth, supporting the immune system, losing excess fat, protecting the brain against dementia and decreasing asthma symptoms. In recent years (perhaps due to excessive sunscreen usage and increased indoor activities), there is concern among healthcare professionals about a vitamin D deficiency in children. And a 2007 study showed that not getting enough sunlight (vitamin D) actually increases our risk of cancer by 70%! It’s a natural … Continue reading

Natural Remedies for Postpartum Hair Loss

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss | Eco-Mothering.com

Hair loss after giving birth is quite common. The high levels of estrogen that kept your hair thick and luxurious throughout pregnancy suddenly take a nosedive, which triggers your body’s normal process of hair shedding. What’s normal? An average woman sheds about 100 hairs per day. During pregnancy, your body holds onto all that hair, so it seems like you’re losing a lot when they begin to fall out after the baby is born. Relax. It’s the extra hair falling out—in addition to your daily shedding—as the body returns to its pre-pregnancy hair growth and shedding rates. The hair loss tapers off to its normal rate between 6-12 months after giving birth. While the hair loss process is normal, it can seem scary. To learn about a few natural remedies, read my full post on MammaBaby. This post is featured on Thank Your Body Thursday and Natural Living Monday.

Treating Pain Naturally: The Power of Therapeutic Yoga

Healing Power of Yoga | Eco-Mothering.com

This is a guest post by Maggie Richards. For tiredness, stress and ailments, we hurriedly self-medicate with high amounts of caffeine, a glass of wine and over-the-counter pain relievers. Instead of truly treating our mental conditions or physical problems at the core of the issue, we tend to mask negative emotions and physical pain with quick, and usually unhealthy, fixes. Rather than rely on medications to alleviate our various pains, instead resort to holistic approaches and alternatives that also support the global sustainability movement. Suffering from mental anguish, unbearable pain or a significant injury? Head to the yoga studio instead of the hospital. Instead of popping pills and burning through prescriptions, meditate and free yourself from pain through ancient yoga poses. Top 5 Benefits of Reflexology

A year ago I had my first visit to a reflexologist. I’ve seen her every month since then, and my feet have never been happier! During that time I have not been sick at all. Reflexology is more than just a foot massage; it’s the ancient Chinese practice of rebalancing chi, or the life energy that flows through the body via meridians. There are reflex zones on the soles of our feet that stimulate healing in other parts of our body. Overall, reflexology improves circulation, reduces stress and is a wonderful, preventative measure to good health. Here are five more reasons why you might want to try it. Balanced Hormones Regular reflexology can help increase energy levels, stabilize moods, control eating habits and relieve menopausal issues. How does it do all that? Through the 7,000-plus nerve endings in the feet that connect to every system of the body. The stimulation … Continue reading

Top 5 Things You Should Know About Hazardous Waste in Your Home

Household Hazardous Waste | Eco-Mothering.com

I made a drop-off at the Eco-Depot last week. That’s Rhode Island’s household hazardous waste (HHW) collection agency. I’ve known about them for years but pure laziness has kept me from ridding our home of toxic products (some are even leftover from the previous residents). Scroll to the end of this post to see a partial list of what is considered household hazardous waste. It feels great to have finally made the trip. This isn’t to say that my home is completely toxin free. We have nail polish remover, antifreeze, craft glues, etc. that we still use. But getting rid of the old stuff has made a big dent, and it makes me breathe a little easier. Know the Dangers So there’s a can of old paint thinner sitting in your basement. Big deal. A few items don’t seem like much, but when you add up all the toxic products in … Continue reading
