Uses and Benefits of Yarrow

Uses for Yarrow | Eco-Mothering.com

We added a few new plants to our Zen garden this year; one of them my daughter picked out was the yarrow plant or Achillea millefolium. She liked its feathery green leaves, and it has since grown rather quickly (probably because yarrow is often found growing wild in North America) and bloomed pretty pink-orange flowers that she can see from her bedroom window. It wasn’t until I looked the plant up online that I discovered what a highly beneficial plant Sofie chose. Staunching Wounds Sometimes known as “nosebleed,” the yarrow plant has a long history in wound treatment. Sources vary on whether the Greeks, the Romans or the Neanderthals used it first; however, yarrow was often employed by soldiers in battle to staunch bleeding. I was intrigued by this. A few weeks ago, when I cut myself with a paring knife (a small cut), it stopped bleeding almost instantly once … Continue reading

What’s in Your Tampon? It’s Time to Detox the Box. Period.

Remember Justin Timberlake’s Dick in a Box music video from Saturday Night Live? Women’s Voices for the Earth spoofed it. But instead of presents, it’s toxic chemicals in pads and tampons. Studies have shown that commonly used menstrual pads and tampons contain dioxins, pesticide residues and chemicals with names like methyleugenol and tonalide — many of which have been linked to hormone disruption and cancer. Click the image below to watch the video, and then tell Tampax and Always to drop the toxins and list all their ingredients!

This post is sponsored by Green Sisterhood. As always, the opinion is my own. Answer this question: Do you treat your skin as well as you treat your child’s? The honest answer for me would be: No. Most of my life I made buying decisions based on price and/or convenience. I have to admit that I didn’t start caring much about what lotions and other skin care products I used until I became a mother and began worrying about the potential toxins that could enter my daughter’s skin. When Sofie was a baby, I sought out baby-specific, non-toxic products geared toward sensitive skin… and I still used whatever was on sale for myself. Quality Sun Care for the Whole Family The year that I turned 40, I began to change my tune and realized that I wanted — and deserved — quality too! (Turning 40 will do that to you.) Since … Continue reading

Natural Remedies for Earaches | Eco-Mothering.com

This is a guest post by Michelle Ramone. During the winter, a mom’s number one enemy is the cold and flu. Despite meticulous cold prevention efforts, kids still get sick. You can heal your child back to health and cure throbbing ear pain with natural home remedies. What Causes an Ear Infection? An earache can be caused by a legitimate infection or fluid buildup that causes pressure and irritation on the ear drum. Untreated fluid buildup could cause an actual infection. An acute ear infection can also be caused by a viral or bacterial infection in the middle ear as an individual recovers from an upper respiratory tract infection or cold. You can gather more ear infection and earache info on symptoms and … Continue reading

Product Review and Giveaway: Mother’s Therapy Organics Hand Sanitizer

Mother's Therapy Organics | Eco-Mothering.com

Triclosan, that chemical found in many soaps, toothpaste and, mostly, hand sanitizers, has gotten a bad rap for years. Studies have linked it to thyroid malfunction, liver toxicity and muscle impairment (particularly around the heart). While the FDA is still researching the possible side effects of triclosan, why risk it? Especially when there are products out there without that superfluous, potentially harmful ingredient. One of those is Mother’s Therapy Organics, a women-owned company focused on non-toxic sanitizing products. Their items—currently a hand sanitizer, a germ-fighting lotion and a baby lotion—contain NO triclosan. Instead, they use natural ingredients such as aloe, alcohol, Echinacea, goldenseal and essential oils (lavender, lemon, clove, sweet orange, sweet almond). We’ve been using the hand sanitizer and germ-fightin’ lotion for a few weeks now, and I love the soothing cucumber scent. The lotion is non-greasy. The sanitizer dissolves into your skin without that goopiness some brands have. … Continue reading
