Whether for an extended period of time or just a quick weekend getaway, summer is a favorite time for travel. Time to escape the hustle and bustle of our daily lifestyle. But travel often means car, boat, train and plane rides — rides that leave some of us nauseous, dizzy and vomiting.
People prone to motion sickness have a variety of over-the-counter medications to choose from. While these medications may work, they may also cause unwanted side effects. For something as simple as motion sickness, there are loads of natural remedies that are safe, effective and inexpensive (even free in some cases)!
The following are just a few options to get you through that bumpy ride. Please note that these may ease your symptoms but may not completely take them away.
Lime
Cutting a piece of lime and smelling it throughout the ride can alleviate nausea and keep you calm. Make sure to fully inhale that strong citrus scent and to keep going until symptoms subside.
Ginger
A common relief, ginger in most forms, from candy to capsules, can relieve and prevent upset stomach, nausea and vomiting. Don’t reach for ginger ale though — the carbonation can possibly make matters worse.
Breathing Exercises
Here’s a remedy that doesn’t cost a penny. Inhaling and exhaling very deeply and slowly through your nostrils can relieve nausea and clear your mind. It is mind over matter, after all!
Peppermint
Similar to breathing in a lime, the strong scent of peppermint will keep you in check. For best results, douse peppermint oil on a towel and inhale.
Focus Forward
When nausea hits us, we want to keep our head down and in between our legs, but rather than solving the problem, this may make it worse. Instead, sit up straight and keep your eyes focused forward while following the breathing exercise mentioned above.
Acupressure
There is an acupuncture spot, known as P6, that can relieve motion sickness if pressed the right way. Find the spot by measuring two inches below the middle crease of your wrist. Apply pressure to this area with two or three fingers.
Homeopathy
If you prefer to reach for the meds, why not try the safest of them all? There are plenty of homeopathic remedies for motion sickness. These are 100% natural, non-toxic and do not cause any unpleasant side effects. Plus, they are often less expensive!
