Some people only think about an eco lifestyle on Earth Day, April 22. However, a little research showed me that every month has a few unique and earth-friendly holidays that can be cause for celebration. Pick whichever ones appeal to you, then get out there and celebrate!
June is Camping Month. Of course it is. It’s the kick-off to summer and what better way to celebrate than ditching the structured house for some time outdoors. While camping is already a pretty eco-friendly activity, here are a few tips for making camping greener.
June is also Gay Pride Month, Aquarium Month, National Adopt a Cat Month and Iced Tea Month.
June’s Celebrations by Date
- June 1 – Go Barefoot Day
Also, known as “earthing” where we draw electrons from the earth, going barefoot has been shown to improve our health: reduced stress, better immunity, less pain. Try it today and maybe you’ll be inspired to go barefoot the whole month. - June 5 – World Environment Day
Started by the United Nations, this day aims to raise awareness and action for respecting the environment. Sounds just like Earth Day to me, but I guess you can’t have too much eco awareness, huh? Find out your options for participating in World Environment Day via sports, art, music or education. - June 8 – Upsy Daisy Day
A reminder to get up “gloriously, gratefully and gleefully” today. Get yourself in a positive vibration and see what other wonderfulness you attract to yourself. - June 12 – Loving Day
This day commemorates the case of Loving v. Virginia, in which a black woman and white man (Richard Loving) wanted to marry, which was illegal in 1958 Virginia. A 1967 Supreme Court ruling eventually banned any laws that made mixed race marriages illegal. Thank goodness, otherwise, I’d be sitting in jail myself. - June 14 – World Blood Donor Day
A great day to give blood or encourage others to do so. According to the World Health Organization, there are 108 million blood donations annually and almost half of those are from high-income countries. Never given blood before? Read about my first blood donation. - June 16 – Fresh Veggies Day
This day comes at a time when fresh vegetables abound at your local farmers market. Take the kids, stock up on favorite veggies or try some new ones. Learn why veggies are so good for your health, how many to eat and access kid-friendly recipes here. - June 19 – Juneteenth (also Martini Day)
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that slavery was completely abolished in the United States (two and a half years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation). June 19 is also Martini Day, which I think is pretty self-explanatory. Make it green by using organic vodka or gin in your martini recipe. - June 21 – Summer Solstice
The longest day of the year, celebrated since ancient times with a variety of festivals and ceremonies. Here are five family-friendly Summer Solstice activities. - June 26 – Take Your Dog to Work Day
Begun in 1999 by Pet Sitters International, Take Your Dog to Work Day intends to promote pet adoption as coworkers look on jealously at the bond between you and your furry best friend.
