Tips for Eco Entertaining | Eco-Mothering.com

Along with summer comes outdoor gatherings and backyard barbecues. While being outside may already seem green, here are five ways to go easy on the earth (and save yourself some bucks) when entertaining. Dine on Bamboo and Sugar Cane Several companies — including BAMBU, EATware and Treecycle — now make biodegradable or compostable plates, bowls and cups made from items like recycled plastic or sugar cane. When our parties aren’t too large, we prefer to skip the disposables altogether and use our regular dishes. If you don’t have enough, comb thrift shops and yard sales to create a funky collection of colorful tableware for entertaining. Dress it up with pretty cloth napkins or items from nature for a tablescape right out of HGTV. Drink with Less Packaging Fill glass pitchers with water, lemonade or iced tea instead of buying individual bottles. (They also look nicer on the table.) Nix the juice … Continue reading

Top 5 Summer Solstice Family Activities

summer-solstice

This June 21 we celebrate the Summer Solstice — also known as Litha or Midsummer Night — as the longest day of the year. In the northern hemisphere, we often unofficially honor this time as the start of summer when kids finish school and vacation begins. On a deeper level, the Solstice is a fire festival, which our ancestors have celebrated for centuries, honoring our connection to the burning warmth and life-giving rays of the sun. Here are five ideas for celebrating the Summer Solstice with your kids: Build a Bonfire This is the traditional activity in cultures around the world. In Greece, men leap over flames; Norwegians often stay up all night with the fire; and Bulgarians perform a barefoot dance on smoldering embers. You can choose a much safer ritual around a backyard fire pit or campfire. Sing songs, have a drum circle, roast marshmallows or dance around with … Continue reading

The History of Mother’s Day

history-mothers-day

I love researching the stories behind our modern holidays. Who created it? Why? How did it become popular? Mother’s Day isn’t considered one of the “big” holidays, but it’s certainly an important one to all us mothers out there. And while it may have become a bit commercial over the years, at its heart, Mother’s Day was meant to give sincere tribute to the never-ending work of motherhood. How It All Began In the U.S., Mother’s Day has its roots in the Civil War period when a West Virginian named Ann Reeves Jarvis organized local Mother’s Day Work Clubs teaching mothers how to best care for their children. These clubs expanded to bring together families that had been divided during the war. Quite unrelated, a few years later, activist and women’s suffragist Julia Ward Howe began campaigning for a national Mother’s Day for Peace. Her vision was for a day … Continue reading

sofie-daffodils

The vernal equinox (March 20) marks the first day of spring, a shifting of seasons, a time when daylight and darkness are of equal length. Nature is in balance. Traditionally, the vernal equinox focuses on rebirth, and it was honored by ancient cultures in the festival of Ostara. With winter giving way to spring, Ostara celebrations centered around new life, fertility and the planting season. For us in the northern hemisphere, we appreciate spring’s soft breezes, newly born wildlife and the melting snow giving way to damp, nutrient-rich earth. It is a season of wonder, new beginnings and a “spring fever” that energizes us from our dormancy. Here are five ideas and family activities for honoring the essence of spring. Nesting Birds Clean out your family’s hair brushes (or the vacuum cleaner) and put the hair outside for the birds to build their nests with. Engage in some birdwatching and see how many … Continue reading

Top 5 Eco Tips for Hosting an Oscar Party

The Academy Awards are coming up, and I’ve been a fan of the show since childhood. Even if I haven’t seen any of the nominated movies (as is the case this year), it’s fun to ogle the stars, laugh at Ellen’s jokes and discuss fashion with my daughter. Last year I even wrote about the eco gowns on the red carpet. (I’m hoping for more of those this year.) With Oscar season comes Oscar parties, so here are a few ways you can green yours. Cast Your Vote Electronically It may seem like a small thing, but why print out ballots when some sites offer easy online voting? Both Oscar.go.com and Entertainment Tonight offer options where you can make your picks via Facebook and even compare with friends. An added benefit? The computer does all the tallying so you don’t have to worry about your math skills after downing a few … Continue reading
