Top 5 Yoga Poses for Kids

Kids love to move. Getting them started early with yoga feeds that need and offers a ton of benefits—both physical and mental—including: strength, flexibility, concentration, self-control, balance, expression, confidence and relaxation. Who doesn’t want all that for their child? Below are five poses (four easy, one challenging) that are great for introducing kids to yoga.

yoga-poses-for-kids

  1. Tree Pose (Vriksasana)

yoga-treeThis classic is the first yoga pose my daughter latched onto, and she still loves it. Tree pose teaches self-control and concentration while it improves a child’s balance and lower body strength. Kids “become” a tree by planting their feet into the ground for stability and noticing the sway of their bodies. Many often find they have better balance on one side more than another, which is perfectly normal.

  2. Downward-Facing-Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

yoga-downward-dogAn excellent and invigorating pose for kids and adults alike, Downward Dog is good for relieving tension and energizing the body. Its full-body stretch helps relieve back pain, headaches and fatigue. Traditionally part of the Sun Salutation sequence, Downward Dog flows well into Child’s Pose.

    yoga-Ldog

A fun version of this pose is L-Dog, which is like downward dog with your feet against a wall. Sofie loves L-Dog, which she learned from her yoga teacher, Miss Elyse (Om Kids Yoga Studio), who believes upside poses are excellent for all ages: “Anytime we go upside down we are improving digestion and blood circulation throughout the body. Upside down poses such as L-Dog and Scorpion build lots of upper body strength and helps kids let go of their fears.”

  3. Bridge (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)

yoga-bridgeThis floor pose stretches the upper body and chest, improves digestion, increases flexibility and calms the mind. It’s also helpful for relieving stress. You can make a game of Bridge by pushing toy boats or animals beneath your child’s lifted body. This will inspire them to see how high they can raise up. Bridge is also an excellent pose for adults who spend large quantities of time hunched over a computer.

  4. Lion Pose (Simhasana)

yoga-lionKids always love animal poses and this one adds a fun vocal element. Lion strengthens the lungs, releases facial tension and activates the immune glands of your lymph nodes. The pose can be done sitting cross-legged or kneeling. Have your child think of something that’s bothering them as they squeeze their body, hands and face real tight. Then let it go by extending the arms forward, releasing the tension, sticking out the tongue and roaring loudly. Repeat several times.

  5. Crow Pose (Bakasana)

yoga-crowThis one takes some practice. I have never been able to do Crow, but Sofie’s getting close. Crow is the pose for building arm strength and balance. According to Miss Elyse, crow also builds confidence. “Most kids have to work really hard at learning the arm balance, and when they finally get it, they are so excited and more confident to try other challenging yoga poses.”

Here’s a great video for getting into Crow.

Rhode Islanders should definitely check out Om Kids Yoga with Elyse Rotondo. She offers weekly classes for babies to teens as well as mother/daughter retreats and monthly pajama party yoga!

Top 5 Pampering Ideas for Mom (That Don’t Involve a Lot of Stuff)

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, you’ll likely be getting some appreciation and gifts from your loved ones. However, sometimes those flowers or jewelry aren’t what you really crave. Often the things moms need don’t even involve things. It’s time or space or pampering we yearn for.

Here’s five ideas on how to treat yourself or your mom like the amazing person she is.

  1. Quiet Time

Carve out a whole day where nothing is scheduled. Arrange ahead of time to have Dad, family, friends or a babysitter take the kids… for at least 6 hours —you deserve some serious alone time. Get out in nature: lie on the beach, stroll through the woods, go surfing.

At home, you might read a book, soak in the tub, or stay in bed all day. Just be sure household chores are done earlier in the week so that you aren’t tempted to “get a few things done” during your precious alone time. This is not the time for to-do lists or special projects, unless that special project is a favorite hobby that you’ve neglected for months or years due to lack of time. This is your time for doing things with joy, not obligation.

  2. Queen for a Day

Obviously, you need buy-in from the kids and partner on this one. But wouldn’t it be great to have others serving you for a whole day? They pamper you with breakfast in bed and they clean up the kitchen afterwards. They drive you to go shopping, to a lunch date, to that guitar lesson you’ve always wanted to take. Make sure to fit an afternoon nap in between lunch and your favorite dinner—you provide the menu, they cook and clean and provide the after-dinner entertainment.

  3. Reflexology

Everybody always includes massage into gift ideas for Mom. Don’t get me wrong, massages are great, and I’ll take one any day of the week. However, some women aren’t comfortable with full-body touch from strangers.

Last year I discovered the often overlooked joys and benefits of reflexology. It’s more than just a massage for your feet. It’s “body mapping” wherein pressure applied to specific parts of your feet affects connected body areas. Like acupuncture without the needles. Our feet are overworked and underappreciated; a little attention serves the whole body. When you find someone who does it well, reflexology is an hour of pure bliss.

  4. Hired Help

Sort of the like the Queen for a Day, except you hire a professional service for a week. Pick your most contentious household chore. Do you hate nonstop meal preparation? Get yourself a cook. Wish someone would scrub the grout in the bathroom shower and get to the bottom of that smell in the garage? Hire a maid. Or how about a chauffeur to haul the kids around to their activities while you spend time on your own projects? Sounds enticing, doesn’t it? Luxurious, some might say. But who deserves such luxury more than a mom?

  5. Girlfriend Getaway

Extended time with girlfriends is typical of single life. However, once you have kids, it diminishes greatly. Your girlfriends are often mothers themselves, and scheduling a simple lunch becomes more of a hassle than it’s worth. Don’t let those friendships falter though. Make time for a weekend or even a week-long retreat. Nothing but you and the gals doing whatever floats your boat. Here are a few things on my list: Swim with dolphins while doing yoga in the Bahamas. Tour California wine country. Ride horses and explore rainforests in Costa Rica. Dine al fresco in Italy.

Experiences—alone or with others—often rejuvenate more than things do. They also offer connection. And what could be better than relaxation, rejuvenation and connection?

YES TO GRAPEFRUIT Product Review and Giveaway

I remember when the YES To beauty brand launched with YES To Carrots. The designer in me was drawn to their stylish logo and packaging. The nature girl in me was drawn to their veggie ingredients and lack of parabens, phthalates and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS).

Over the years, YES To expanded to cucumbers, tomatoes and blueberries. I’ve been a fan of the Cucumber Soothing Body Butter for sensitive skin and the Blueberry Cleansing Towelettes —the cloths are biodegradable!

Their newest line of fruit products, YES To Grapefruit, is geared toward repairing damaged skin.

Grapefruit—known for treating infections and depression—is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, those lovely things that protect cells from free radicals. The lycopene helps even skin tone. So doesn’t it seem the perfect fruit for your face and body?

Some of the main ingredients in the YES To grapefruit product line include: Licorice Root, which calms and soothes inflammation (like those dark circles under your eyes); White Tea with anti-oxidant properties for correcting pigmentation; Lemon Balm, which calms skin while restoring its glow; and African Star Grass, which helps fade age spots and pigmentation. The San Francisco-based company offers full disclosure of their other ingredients in the product information pages as well as in their FAQs.

I always like a company that gives back. The YES To Seed Fund joins forces with other organizations to help supply under-served communities with healthy nutrition. In 2012, they partnered with Mama Hope to plant school gardens in the U.S. and Africa. (Your school can apply for a garden grant here.) Now they’re giving back to you with a product giveaway.

Top 5 Eco-Friendly Walking Gear

April 1-7 is National Public Health Week with Friday being touted as National Walk to Work Day. The health benefits of walking abound, from burning calories and preventing heart disease to reducing stress and increasing sexual desire. Take a look at my Top 5 items that can make your walking a little greener.

  1. Bamboo Socks

Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource. Once cut, it regenerates quickly. A bamboo grove produces 35% more oxygen than a similar-sized grove of trees. In addition, bamboo is naturally soft, absorbent and does not harbor odor. All this makes it perfect sock material. I own several pairs of Ecosox, and I love them. I’ve worn holes into my first pair, but have yet to toss them. They keep my feet dry, warm and cool - whatever the weather calls for. Choose between sport, hiking or work Ecosox.

  2. Green Sneakers

The Dutch company OAT offers “shoes that bloom” including a pair of fully biodegradable sneakers that can actually be planted once you’ve outgrown them. Made from breathable canvas and cork soles embedded with seeds, OAT shoes are meant to “connect people with their environment in an imaginative way.”

Or try New Balance’s newSKY sneakers – each pair is made from eight recycled plastic bottles. (Celeb note: Naomi Watts, Sophia Bush and Selma Blair have all sported a pair of newSKY.) The minimalist design of this lightweight sneaker conserves material in production.

  3. Water Bottles for a Cause

While any reusable water bottle is better for the environment than buying packaged water, here are two that add a little something more. MiiR’s stainless steel, BPA-free bottle offers a range of color choices and lid types. Your purchase goes further knowing that, through the company’s one4one program, a dollar from every bottle sale provides one person with clean water for one year.

Vapur is the “anti-bottle,” made in the USA of durable BPA-free plastic that can be rolled, folded and tucked away for travel. It’s dishwasher safe and can also be frozen to use as an ice pack. Available in several cool colors. Vapur also donates 1% of its annual profits to charitable organizations worldwide.

  4. Coffee Sports Bra

Would you like some coffee with your workout? The super-supportive Luna bra from Moving Comfort includes in its fabric something called S.Café® - a composite fiber that originates from coffee grounds. No kidding. The genius of it all is that coffee grounds naturally absorb odors, which makes them perfect for a sports bra.

  5. Safe Strollers

    Orbit stroller

The eco-friendly Orbit Baby G2 Stroller

Of course you’ll want to take baby on a walk with you. And while cotton baby slings might arguably be most green, there are strollers on the market now with excellent eco improvements. These include the Orbit Baby G2 and Maclaren. Orbit Baby was the first stroller company to develop a PVC and phthalate-free rain shield. Their G2 stroller uses organic, hypoallergenic and non-toxic flame retardant fabrics, making it one of the greenest strollers on the market.

The Maclaren company adheres to the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink when selecting materials and reducing waste during production. Their packaging contains 70% recycled fiber content, and they have removed all phthalates, lead, PVC and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) from their strollers. They also offer recycling centers for used strollers and have a company goal to become carbon-neutral.

Top 5 Essential Oils for Natural Healing

I’ve been a fan of essential oils (EOs) since my husband bought me a starter kit 15 years ago. While I have used them in baths and massages, I use them most frequently in a burner for soothing sicknesses (lemongrass for reducing fever) and or influencing the mood of others (ylang ylang for calming anxiety). They smell great and come in handy for relieving a host of child-related symptoms.

Here are my Top 5 essential oils. Please be sure to research them for proper application and dosages.

top5-essential-oils

  1. Tea Tree

Distilled from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca Alternifolia tree, this is one of my stock oils and a great addition to the natural medicine cabinet. Tea tree oil is touted for its antiseptic properties in fighting bacteria, viruses and even foot fungus. It’s also great as a cleaner for disinfecting household items like the humidifier. I often burn tea tree with other oils when Sofie is sick as it helps alleviate respiratory problems and strengthens the immune system. Inventive Use: A drop of tea tree oil diluted in 1 teaspoon of olive oil is said to help relieve ear aches.

  2. Lavender

Another must-have in your essential oil collection, lavender has multiple uses as a painkiller, relaxant, antiseptic and antidepressant. Its calming properties make lavender the scent of choice in eye pillows and bath products. (I chose it for Sofie’s nighttime “monster spray.”) Lavender is one of the safer oils, often applied directly to the skin in massages or for treating bug bites and sunburn. Inventive Use: Stimulate hair growth by massaging the oil onto your head.

  3. Jasmine

One of the best-smelling EOs in my opinion, jasmine acts as an antidepressant, antispasmodic and aphrodisiac (I sometimes burn it with other oils to set the mood for a party ). It’s an oil with contradictory properties; regarded as both calming and stimulating, jasmine can simultaneously strengthen contractions and relieve pain in childbirth (not recommended for use in pregnancy until advanced stages of labor). When blended with other oils, jasmine can encourage cell growth and skin elasticity. It’s also effective with lingering coughs. Inventive Use: The Chinese gave jasmine to inebriated guests to clear their heads.

  4. Roman Chamomile

Revered since ancient times as one of the nine sacred herbs, chamomile is recommended for its analgesic, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used for alleviating muscle pain, headaches, toothaches and skin conditions such as acne and dermatitis. Also a relaxant, Roman chamomile helps with insomnia, digestive problems and menstrual pain. Inventive Use: When diffused, it can help calm irritable babies and toddler tantrums.

  5. Cypress

This woody scent blends well with other oils and acts as an astringent, antiseptic and sedative. (I use it in the sick room to aid with coughs and flu symptoms.) Due to its purifying and balancing qualities, cypress calms anger and anxiety and regulates bodily excesses (nose bleeds, fluid loss). It’s especially helpful in balancing the female reproductive system. Inventive Use: A natural deodorant, cypress can be blended with other oils to control body odor.

Top 3 Eco-Friendly Fashions at the Oscars

I grew up watching the pre-Oscar Red Carpet interviews, and now my daughter watches it with me. Even at six, she has strong opinions on which dresses she likes.

I originally wrote about eco-friendly Oscar fashion in 2010 when I discovered Livia Firth’s company, Eco Age, and the Green Carpet Challenge. Last year, Oscar-winner Meryl Streep’s gold Lanvin gown was highlighted for its eco- consciousness, so I was a bit disappointed to see so few sustainable designs this season. I couldn’t even get enough to make a Top 5 list! However, here are the top 3.

2013-eco-fashion-oscars

  1. NAOMIE HARRIS Actress in Skyfall and Pirates of the Carribbean
Harris wore the winning sustainable design from the 4th Annual Red Carpet Green Dress Challenge. Created by Vivienne Westwood and Michael Badger, Harris’ stunning mustard-colored gown was made from GOTS certified organic silk Crepe De Chine with natural plant dyes, recycled zippers and—wait for it—recycled candy wrappers! Because the fabric dyeing process used goldenrod and chamomile, the pollutant-free byproducts went straight to the compost bin!
  2. HELEN HUNT Oscar-nominated actress for The Sessions
A longtime supporter of Global Green, Hunt chose to go with a simple, navy blue strapless, eco-friendly gown from H&M’s “Conscious” collection. To reduce textile waste, H&M recently launched a global garment-recycling program in which customers can exchange used clothing (of any brand) for store vouchers.
  3. ANNE HATHAWAY Oscar-winning actress for Les Misérables
Continuing her trend of wearing vegan shoes throughout this season’s award show circuit, Hathaway donned a pair of vegan Giuseppe Zanotti heels with her Prada Oscar gown. These silver strappy shoes were custom made for Hathaway, but you can buy the champagne-colored vegan design she wore to the Costume Design Guild Awards online at Amazon.

Top 5 Things I Enjoyed During My New Year Body Cleanse

Three years ago I did a cleanse that kick-started a healthy eating and exercise regimen where I lost 20 pounds. This past weekend I did another cleanse, mainly to eliminate the post-holiday toxins in my system. For 3 ½ days I fasted until noon (water, herbal tea and homemade smoothies excepted), and ate only veggies, fruits, raw nuts and wheat-free whole grains (namely, brown rice).

For me, it was a kind of spiritual experience. I feel “cleaned out” not just physically, but emotionally as well. As if I’ve confronted the illusions of reality, reconnected with my essence and am now ready to take on anything.

Or you could just do it for health benefits. Here’s what else I enjoyed:

  1. A dietary “high.” Okay, Day 1 sucked. I was hungry and crabby around people who could eat anything they wanted. Salads aren’t so wonderful when it’s the only thing on your menu. However, on Day 2, I woke up not hungry (surprisingly) and a bit lightheaded. The “I’ve had a few beers” kind of lightheaded where all the world seems happy and slightly out of focus. My husband said it was a sign that my body was already breaking down fat for energy because its food stores had been used up. A nice side benefit. The high continued for most of Day 2 and 3 and I found it like being in a meditative trance. I felt super mellow, calm and slightly detached. Not the best condition for high energy tasks but perfect for handling child tantrums or bill-paying anxieties.
  2. Dropping 6 pounds. Getting rid of toxins and extra holiday weight is the perfect way to start the new year.
  3. Saying “goodbye” to cravings. This was my main reason for doing the cleanse, and on Day 3 it seemed to kick in. It helps that I don’t have many sweets in the house, of course, and I hope to maintain that for Sofie’s benefit as well. But with the limited food selection of the cleanse, my body began to get excited about the prospect of a ripe pear or raw almonds for dessert. This is not a diet; I still plan to eat cheesecake and bagels and Chinese food, but without that gorging-so-you-barely-taste-it energy. The cleanse reminds me to listen to what my body really wants and to eat when actually hungry instead of when I’m feeling anxious, bored or depressed.
  4. A deeper appreciation for simple foods. I thought I’d be bored by plain brown rice, but each bite (with a hint of sea salt) was scrumptious, especially when it was my only warm meal of the day. Because I had such little variety during the cleanse, I ate my food slower and relished each morsel. Enjoying a cup of tea or sliced veggies – slowly – made it almost a spiritual process. I really tasted the flavor of the rice, the radish, the blood orange.
  5. Apple banana smoothies. Yum!
    • 1 banana, peeled and chopped
    • 1 organic apple, peeled and chopped
    • ¾ cup orange juice
    • 1 tsp flaxseeds
    • 1 cup ice
    • Toss into blender and enjoy!
