July’s Celebrations by Date

  • July 3 – International Plastic Bag Free Day
It takes a plastic bag anywhere from 100-500 years to fully decompose. In the meantime, there are quite a lot of them forming masses in our oceans and clogging our landfills. Choose this day to switch to reusable bags and engage online at Bag Free World.
  • July 4 – Independence from Meat Day
Going vegetarian can reduce your dietary carbon footprint by half. The real challenge here is eating veggie on a traditionally meat-heavy day of burgers and hot dogs. Get inspired by these 4th of July vegetarian recipes.
  • July 8 – SCUD Day
SCUD stands for Savor the Comic, Unplug the Drama. I’m not sure who made this day up, but it’s about ditching the dramatic attitude and looking at the funnier side of life. Might be a good day to watch stand-up comedy, giggle with the kids or hit the spa.
  • July 12 – Etch A Sketch Day
This childhood favorite lends itself to creativity. Can’t nab your kid’s Etch A Sketch? Just grab any pen or pencil and draw something. Doodling loosens up your brain and relaxes you. In the meantime, learn the story behind the Etch A Sketch.
  • July 20 – Moon Day
In honor of the day we first set foot on the moon: July 20, 1969. How to celebrate? Throw a party with Moon Pies, moonshine, Chinese moon cakes or Goodnight Moon. And be sure to brush up on how the moon affects the earth.
  • July 23 – Gorgeous Grandma Day
Well, we have Mother’s Day, so why not one for grandmothers? It’s a day to honor the older women in our lives whose sparkle and strength may get overlooked. If your grandmother is still alive, spend the day with her. If not, perhaps make a visit to a nursing home or surprise a random senior on the street with a bouquet.
  • July 27 – Take Your Houseplant for a Walk Day
Plants need attention too. Supposedly, acquainting a plant with its environment is good for its health. They might want to move to a bigger pot or a different room in your house. Perhaps they could use a breath of fresh air outside. Or maybe they just need some new friends. Choose one of these indoor-friendly plants.
  • July 31 – Talk in an Elevator Day
It’s brave, it’s bold, it’s often unheard of… breaking the silence with a stranger in an elevator. Go for it!
