Making Clean Energy Choices

Want to celebrate clean energy? Bring the family to Energy Independence Day this Sunday, July 11, from 1-4 p.m. in Middletown. The event includes fun and games for the kids, tips on saving money, tours of the wind turbine, free admission and free parking (or take the free shuttle from Easton’s Beach, right after visiting the Save The Bay Exploration Center).

Unfortunately, we have already committed to a birthday party, so I cannot go. But I did make my own energy statement just moments ago by signing up with People’s Power and Light for my heating oil service. I’m very excited about this. When we bought our house just over a year ago, it came with a contract for another large, New England oil company, and we chose to stay with them. The decision was made out of convenience and laziness, really, because since then I have complained bitterly at their high rates every time we had to fill up the tank; grumbled over a few unsatisfying experiences with inept service technicians; and resented every dollar contributed to their big corporation.

Providence wind turbines supply about 40% of the electricity of the local wastewater treatment facility.

It’s July; our contract with them has ended; and I am eager about beginning a new relationship with PPL. Who knew I could get this invested in heating service? PPL offers excellent, below-the-state-average prices during the heating season. And while we chose the regular oil for now, it’s good to know we have the option of BioHeating Oil, which is blended with oil refined from vegetable oil, recycled cooking grease or animal fats. Just knowing that I’m supporting a company that supports renewable, clean energy sources gives me a sense of relief.

People’s Power and Light will be at the Energy Independence Day along with a long list of other exhibitors offering green products, providing energy demonstrations and initiating discussions of national energy issues.

Speaking of which, the Senate is currently working on their version of Clean Energy Legislation, and they could use your support. Read the details and send a letter to your Senator now.
