Some people only think about an eco lifestyle on Earth Day, April 22. However, a little research showed me that every month has a few unique and earth-friendly holidays that can be cause for celebration. Pick whichever ones appeal to you, then get out there and celebrate!
April is Lawn and Garden Month. Beginner gardeners can get resources on Vegetable Gardening 101. Or if you’re looking for simple tips on how to make your yard more eco-friendly and safer for the kids, read this post.
April is also Couples Appreciation Month, Poetry Month, Decorating Month and National Humor Month.
April’s Celebrations by Date:
- April 2 – International Children’s Book Day
Recognized as the approximate birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, International Children’s Book Day is a day to call attention to children’s literature around the world. So go to the library, stock up on some books and read, read, read! - April 3 – Walk to Work Day
Typically held in the U.S. on the first Friday in April, Walk to Work Day reduces carbon emissions and burns calories. (This is especially good since April 3 is also Chocolate Mousse Day and Fish Fingers and Custard Day!) Go the extra green mile by investing in eco-friendly walking gear. - April 6 – New Beer’s Eve
When President Roosevelt ended prohibition on April 7, 1933 (after 13 years), Americans crowded the streets of their local pubs the night before, waiting for the moment when alcohol would again be legal. For us, it’s just another reason to drink, but perhaps you might try some organic or locally-crafted brews today. - April 8 – Draw a Picture of a Bird Day
No worries about artistic talent; this day is simply a tribute to birds. Copy the species of your choice from this bird guide or draw from nature, observing a bird in your backyard. And don’t forget to Tweet about it: #drawapictureofabirdday - April 15 – Microvolunteering Day
This #microday is for those people who always think about giving back to the community, but never get around to actually doing it. Use today to take a baby step toward a larger goal or spend just 10 minutes engaged in an on-demand action wherever you are (some can even be done from your smartphone). - April 16 – Save the Elephant Day
Elephants are awesome. Donate here. - April 17 – Blah Blah Blah Day
It’s time to turn those nagging “Blah blah blah”s of your partner, parent, boss or friend into action. What is somebody always asking you to do that you never get around to? Today’s the day to do it. Pick one, two or three things you’ve ignored or procrastinated over, and just get them done. Right away. Like, now. Why are you still reading this?? - April 22 – Earth Day
Yup, everyone knows this holiday. Now get the story behind Earth Day plus ideas on how to celebrate it. - April 24 – Teach Your Children to Save Day
Initiated by the American Bankers Association, this day is about teaching children the importance of financial saving, but why not make it about saving in general? Saving empty toilet paper tubes for the recycle bin. Saving the button that fell off your shirt so it can be sewn back on instead of tossed in the trash. Saving water by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. - April 29 – World Wish Day
The birth of the Make-a-Wish Foundation occurred when policemen granted the wish of one sick child in 1980. Now countries around the globe use this day to make dreams come true for sick children. Learn more. - April 30 – Poem in your Pocket
Since April is Poetry Month, this is a nice way to end it. The concept began in 2002 by the New York City mayor and has gained international recognition since. Carry a poem in your pocket or purse today and read it aloud to others you meet in your day. Need inspiration? Download one of these poems.
