I did not know about the growing trend of beauty sample subscription services. Apparently, it’s very popular. Consumers sign up for a monthly delivery box of an assortment of beauty products in sample sizes. Why? People can try a range of brands and products to see what they like before purchasing the full-size item. And it’s really cool to get a pretty box of surprises in the mail each month, don’t you think?
I was happy when I received my September sample box from Ted at Yuzen. Their twist on the beauty box is to make the products eco-friendly, which I like since green beauty products often cost more, and who wants to invest in an organic face cream your skin might not like?
Owners Ted and Jen evaluate each product before choosing which ones to include for their LOHAS audience. (Something else I learned — LOHAS is an acronym for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability, or consumers focused on health and fitness, the environment, personal development, sustainable living and social justice. I’m a LOHAS!)

Yuzen eco-friendly beauty subscription service
The name Yuzen (a type of Japanese paper) came from the owners’ years living in Japan and the intentionality they bring to their business. The packaging is well thought out. Boxes are designed for each month and take into account seasonal needs and colors. Each cardboard box contains a beautiful piece of authentic yuzen paper inside as well as 5 or 6 personal care/ lifestyle products and a list detailing why those products were chosen (paraben-free, USDA organic, cruelty free, biodegradable, etc.).
My sample box included some brands I’d never heard of and others I’d seen but had never tried: facial mask and cream from Pangea Organics, beauty wipes from La Fresh, Cowgirl hand cream, Honey Stinger organic energy chews, and mints from St. Claire Organics. I’m impressed with the research that goes into each company, each item and the creation of the box itself.
I mention them now because I think Yuzen makes a great holiday gift idea, especially for moms, sisters, daughters and girlfriends. It’s thoughtful, simple and conscious. It can also be one of those gifts that keeps on giving. Choose from a 1-month ($26), 3-month ($78) or 6-month subscription ($156). Prices include shipping.
Yuzen says they differ from other box subscriptions because most of their products are premium sample-sized and they offer high-quality, eco-friendly items. A typical box is valued at a minimum of $60… so you’re getting quite the deal. Try Yuzen and give yourself or someone else a little Zen each month.
Disclosure: Thanks to Yuzen for providing a sample subscription box. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
