Amber Teething Necklace Review and Giveaway

If I’d known about amber when I was pregnant, it would have been my teether of choice for Sofie. (Much better than those plastic teethers laden with toxic chemicals!) As a natural analgesic, amber necklaces are natural choices for teething pain.

Technically not a stone, amber is actually fossilized tree resin, hence the golden “amber” color. It has been used for its medicinal properties in areas of Europe and Asia for centuries (even Hippocrates mentioned it). Although there are different kinds of amber, Baltic amber is prized for its quality. Baltic amber contains succinic acid, a powerful antioxidant (naturally existing in certain plants) that boosts the immune system and reduces stress.

• Pain relief (especially arthritis and teething)

For amber to work, you must have it touching the skin (so necklaces should be worn under clothing). The warmth of your skin releases the succinic acid of the amber and it is then absorbed into your body.

Baltic amber works well for teething in babies and toddlers because it stimulates the thyroid glands to decrease drooling and inflammation. It is also thought to relieve irritability and discomfort in the ears, throat and stomach. Again, I wish I had this knowledge seven years ago! Sofie suffered from teething pain starting at three months old (that first tooth popped through at five months), and I never felt cold plastic was quite the right answer to her pain.

Some moms worry about the safety of teething necklaces on their babies, and that is a call you need to make for yourself. Quality amber necklaces have safety knots in between every bead to prevent beads from coming loose if the necklace breaks. Still, these necklaces should never be worn to bed. I made sure to put the amber back on the following day, and again, I felt calmer. It’s not a blissed-out state by any means, but just a noticeably calmer, more relaxed state of being.
